Karla T. Swatek is Vice President of Horrow Sports Ventures.
In her 11-year tenure with Horrow Sports Ventures, Swatek has executed strategic marketing, communications, and public relations campaigns for a diverse roster of clients, including International Speedway Corp. (ISC); General Sports Venue/AstroTurf; Cisco Systems; CA; Enterprise Rent-A-Car; CSE; Norfolk Baseball; Disney Institute; the Portland Trail Blazers; HKS Architects; The Honda Classic; North American Polo League; Squire, Sanders, & Dempsey; Boies, Schiller, & Flexner LLP; ComPsych Corp.; and Pop Warner Little Scholars.
Additionally, Swatek has provided content, research, and assumed production roles for Bloomberg TV “Sportfolio”; Versus “The $ports Take”; FoxSports.com; Fox Sports Radio; and CNN. She has written weekly columns on the business of sports for Bloomberg BusinessWeek and PBS “Nightly Business Report,” a monthly “Communique” for SportBusiness International, and books guests for the weekly Sports Byline USA “Beyond the Box Score” radio show.
Working independently and with speakers’ bureaus, Swatek has arranged keynote speeches for Horrow Sports Ventures CEO Rick Horrow domestically and internationally, from HSM World Negotiation Forum, National Conference of Mayors, Stadium Managers Association, and Street and Smith’s Facilities and Franchises to Business of Sports Toronto, UEFA Portugual, and Thailand’s Ministry of Sport.
Swatek is co-author of Beyond the Scoreboard: An Insider’s Guide to the Business of Sport (Human Kinetics, September 2011), and Branding in Sport (Human Kinetics, 2014). She serves as executive editor of Morgan James Publishing’s “Sports Professor Series.”
Before establishing her own company, Swatek and Davidson Associates, a San Diego, CA-based marketing communications firm, in 1999, Swatek served as Publicity Director of Berrett-Koehler Publishers, San Francisco, and Pfeiffer and Company, San Diego. She has also served as Planned Television Arts’ affiliate West Coast Publicity Director.

She served on the communications board of directors of United Way of Santa Clara County.
Swatek is a graduate of Santa Clara University, and completed graduate work at Radcliffe College (the Radcliffe Publishing Course) and Stanford University. Before entering the sports marketing and publishing fields, she did editorial and corporate communications work in Silicon Valley.
An avid tennis player, Swatek has held volunteer leadership roles within the USTA Southern California section, as well as giving her time to the North County Junior Golf Association.
Swatek lives in Carlsbad, California with her husband Mike Davidson and 15 year-old son Andrew.
